Children and youth are vital to our church’s ministry. They are not only the future of the church, but they already minister to us exactly where they are in the present. We appreciate children and youth, and we want our church’s ministry to reflect their importance.

Vacation Bible School

In the summer of each year, we provide a four day Vacation Bible School program for our children at Grace Congregational Church. The focus of our Vacation Bible School is to teach scripture, using a summer-time atmosphere of the outdoors. We encourage children from the community to participate.

Church Camps

The United Church of Christ offers two outdoor ministry programs in Wisconsin: Pilgrim Center (Green Lake, Wisconisn) and Moon Beach (St. Germaine, Wisconsin). Our congregation encourages youth and adults to participate in our church camps by offering $100/week scholarships to anyone who attends a camp at Moon Beach or Pilgrim Center.

We offer two other church camp opportunities. In early summer, we invite our youth to participate in an Extreme Make-Over at Moon Beach. The purpose of this week’s camp is to prepare Moon Beach for its summer programing. We shovel ground, rake leaves, wash windows, build decks, plant grass, paint buildings and much more. Youth who have completed sixth grade through twelfth grade are welcome to attend.

In the fall of each year (typically the last week in September), our church hosts a weekend retreat for our church members and their families at Moon Beach. Our fall retreat includes: worship at Vesper Point, Canoe trips around Moon Lake, nature walks, crafts, great food, a talent night, and lots of time to be together.

Spring Musical

Grace Congregational Church annually provides our children with an opportunity to participate in a spring children’s musical.  In years past, our children have presented delightful pieces that include:
  “Rescue in the Night”  (Story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den)
  “A Technicolor Promise” (Noah)
  “One Upoon a Starry Knight” (Patch the Pirate)
  “Kidnapped on I-Land”  (Patch the Pirate)
  Kids Praise, Kids Praise 2, Kids Praise 3
  Kids Prase 4, Kids Praise5, Kids Priase 6, Kids Praise 7
  “Oh Jonah!” and
  Psalty’s Christmas Calamity.

Children’s Christmas Program

The children of Grace Congregational Church annually present a program during a service worship prior to Christmas each year.  It is our goal to involve as many children as possible.  We expect that our children’s program will be an experience of learning that will increase our children’s knowledge of our Lord’s birth and the importance of his ministry for our lives.

Confirmation Program

Grace Congregational Church is highly committed to its two-year Confirmation Program. Confirmation is offered to youth who are in at least seventh grade who are interested in affirming their baptismal vows and becoming members of the church.
Class sessions are offered on Wednesday evenings during the school year. Through confirmation, participants learn about the Christian faith and its role in our lives. They explore the identity of the United Church of Christ and they get to know the history and mission of our particular congregation. Questions of faith are encouraged! Confirmation is not for those who have solved the mystery of their faith; it is for those who aren’t afraid to wonder what they believe and who seek to embark on a journey of service, creative expression and prayer. The confirmation journey involves partnering with an adult mentor who provides spiritual support and friendship along the way. Other components include:

  • Weekly Class Sessions (September through May);

  • Expectation of Worship Attendance;

  • 20 Mission Hours;

  • Memorization of Scriptures and Creeds Like:

    • Psalm 23;

    • Apostles’ Creed;

    • Lord’s Prayer;

    • The United Church of Christ Statement of Faith;

    • Books of the Bible;

    • I Corinthians 13 and others….

  •  One or more retreats at Moon Beach; Pilgrim Center; or a Milwaukee Inner City Immersion;

  •  A Summer Trip to St. Louis for those who have completed the first year of study;

  •  Reading of Psalms during worship;

  • Work Camp at Moon Beach;

  • Assistance with nursery care;

  • and Acolyte Responsibilities during worship.

At the completion of two years of study, our youth will be given an opportunity to affirm their baptism vows in a service of worship and to receive the laying on of hands.

Children’s Bibles

A Children’s Bible is presented to each family when a child is brought to our church for baptism.  Children’s Bibles are available to our young families upon request.
A New Revised Standard Version of the Bible is presented to children when they are in third grade.  The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) is the standard text that is used at our church because it has been authorized by the National Council of Churches.

First Communion Class

With the permission of parents, children in second grade are invited to attend a First Communion Class that is offered in early spring each year. The first communion class is a six-session learning experience that assists young children in their knowledge of the Lord’s Supper.  We offer a curriculum that deepens a children’s knowledge of scripture, and invites parents and children together to explore the importance of the Christian faith.  We believe that children should have an understanding of some primary biblical stories before they receive this sacrament.

Sunday School Program

A Sunday School program is offered for children beginning at age three and extending through sixth grade.

Sunday School is offered from Labor Day through Memorial Day each year. We do not offer Sunday morning classes for children during the summer.

Nursery Care During Worship

We provide nursery care during our Sunday morning worship services for infants and children to the age of five. For your child's safety, you will be asked to sign your child in and out of the nursery.  All of our adults who work in the nursery have been screened through our safe sanctuary program. We have adult and youth volunteers who oversee the nursery during the eight o’clock worship service.  We have a licensed child-care provider who provides the primary oversight of our nursery during the 10:30 worship service during the school year.
