Confirmation

A two-year Confirmation Program is offered to youth in seventh grade and older.  The intent of this learning experience is to deepen the knowledge and experience of our youth as they prepare for church membership.  Confirmation is the beginning of a lifelong process of discipleship for those who wish to seek the guidance of God and follow the example of Jesus throughout their faith pilgrimage.
Confirmation in our church has at least six components:
Class time that focuses on the knowledge and appreciation of sacred scripture.
The stories and teachings within the bible are rich with meaning.  A significant amount of time will be spent in the classroom learning the history of our faith in scripture and applying those teachings to our lives.

  • Class time that focuses on the church and the practical applications of our faith.Jesus called his followers together into community.  We will spend class time learning about the role of the church in our lives; memorizing some scriptures (and creeds) that will add value to our faith journey; and growing a relationship with God through prayer and service.

  • Leadership in Worship
    During the two year course of study, youth will be given opportunities to assist with worship leadership by reading psalms and being acolytes.

  • Service Beyond SelfJesus called his followers to lives of service.  To encourage our youth to become service-minded, we expect our youth to perform 20 hours of service each year.  We are not stringent in the kind of service that our youth perform---only that they begin the art of caring for others.  Service opportunities may include such tasks as:

    • visiting an elderly person;

    • volunteering at the food pantry or senior center;

    • writing letters to service men and women;

    • walking in the CROP Walk;

    • providing free child-care;

    • or discerning along with your parents a means of being the presence of Christ for another person…...

  • Retreats, Field Trips, and St. Louis TripOur Confirmation Program provides experiences beyond our local church that will deepen the faith of our youth.  We will visit the local synagogue.  We will attend a Confirmation Event held at Lakeland College.  We provide a weekend retreat at either Moon Beach or Pilgrim Center.  At the conclusion of the first year of study, youth are invited to participate in a class trip to St. Louis where we tour ministries related to the church and also enjoy time at Grant’s Farm, the Gateway Arch, and more.

  • Statement of Faith and Personal Testimony

At the conclusion of our Confirmation Program, you will write a statement of faith and personal testimony that will be presented to the congregation.
Classes generally meet on Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Pastor Kim Henning, Senior Pastor.

Generation G

Generation G is a gathering of high school youth that meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The purpose of Generation G is to learn about topics we have a hard time understanding in life such as prayer, when bad things happen to good people, peer pressure, divorce, abuse and family.  We participate in Relay For Life; ring bells for the Salvation Army; and reach out into the community.  We also have fun nights which may include activities like bowling, pizza, camp fires, etc.  This time is a safe place for our youth to share their joys and concerns.

Appalachia Service Project

Since 1997, Grace Congregational Church has been taking high school youth to the Appalachian Mountains for week-long work camps. Appalachia Service Project (ASP) serves the residents in Central Appalachia and has the purpose of serving low-income families. Preparation for each summer’s ASP trip begins in October, with the sale, construction, and distribution of Christmas wreaths. From February through June, we meet monthly to prepare ourselves for the experience that awaits us in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, or Virginia. A Week-Long Mission Trip to the Appalachian Mountains includes:

  • The satisfaction of making a family’s home warmer, safer, and drier;
  • The challenge of repairing roofs, installing insulation, fixing floors, shoring up foundations, building handicapped ramps, and a host of other home improvements;
  • The enjoy of spending 8 days with men, women, college students, and other youth who are committed to service;
  • The daily experience of worship;
  • The knowledge that we have been a part of lifting the spirit of another family, reminding them of God’s love which knows no boundaries.

Interested persons should contact Pastor Kim Henning, or any person who has experienced the Appalachia Service Project in the past.

Work Camp at Moon Beach

Each summer, Grace Congregational Church offers its youth an opportunity to serve at Moon Beach for its Extreme-Makeover Camp.  The camp is held in early summer.  We leave on a Sunday afternoon and return on Thursday.  The chores given us are diverse, all of which men to prepare Moon Beach Camp for the thousands of campers who will use this facility throughout the year.

Leadership in Worship

Youth of all ages are invited to assist with the leadership of worship. High School youth may be liturgists. If interested in leading worship in this capacity, youth should contact our church office and have their names added to our rotation of church leaders.
